STABILITY/COMFORT/BIOMECHANICS

AeroCoach Ascalon extensions are an ergonomic and aerodynamic replacement for standard extensions. Using our Align Wing carbon arm rests, and providing extra support for the forearm and wrist you can improve your handling and stability on the bike when in the aero position.

Ascalon extensions are aerodynamic and lower total system drag by up to 1% compared with Angles extensions. This is worth approximately 2w at 45kph, or 4w at 55kph.

TITANIUM

Ascalons come in two varieties, both sharing the exact same shape. Titanium Ascalons are approximately 85g lighter per pair than carbon Ascalons and are made of 3D printed titanium, using Electron Beam Melting (EBM) to provide a stiff, fatigue resistance and lightweight part. Titanium Ascalons feature a 3D sintered nylon end gripper.

ASCALON OPTIONS

1. BASE BAR ADAPTER

Ascalons attach using either our tilt block adapters (those for which the adapter dropdown menu includes the words “tilt blocks” in the description), or a proprietary adapter if a tilt block adapter is not compatible.

Our Universal tilt block adapters fit dual-mount M5 or M6 base bars with non-threaded through holes that have flat mounting points.

2. ADAPTER ANGLE

All adapters that do include the words “tilt blocks” and don’t include the words “tilt-adjustable” in the adapter dropdown menu description are available in 15, 20 or 25deg angles unless otherwise stated. E.g. ‘ADR/PDQ/Generic (tilt blocks)” or “AeroCoach Phaser”.

All adapters that include the words “tilt adjustable” in the adapter dropdown menu are tilt adjustable. E.g. “Trek Speed Concept (disc brake) – tilt adjustable”. The range of adjustment depends on the base bar / bike:

31.8mm clamps – fully adjustable (any angle can be achieved). Please ensure you have a total 31.8mm round clamp section on the handlebar of 85mm to ensure there is adequate room for the clamps either side of the stem.

Argon E119 Tri+ Disc (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 15deg which can be tilted upwards to any angle up to 35deg.

Cadex Tri –adapters are available in 15 or 25deg angles, and are compatible with the 5deg wedges provided with the Cadex Tri to fine tune these angles further.

Canyon Speedmax CFR / CF SLX (monopost) – adapters are available in 15 or 25deg angles, and are compatible with the 3deg angled wedges provided with the Canyon to fine tune these angles further.

Cervelo P5 disc/PX/P3X (EX10 monopost) – angles of 15, 22, 25 and 32deg can be achieved.

Cervelo P5 disc (EX14 monopost) – angles of 15-40deg can be achieved in 5deg increments.

O rbea Ordu OMX (monopost)- adapter has a base angle of 15deg which can be tilted upwards using the 5deg angled spacers provided by Orbea up to a maximum of 30deg.

Scott Plasma 6 (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 10deg which can be tilted upwards in 2.5deg increments up to a maximum of 25deg.

Trek Speed Concept (disc brake) – adapters provide a 21deg base angle, which can be altered to 14 or 28deg using the -7/+7deg tilt wedges provided by Trek.

T rek Speed Concept (rim brake) (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 15deg which can be tilted upwards to any angle up to 27deg.

TriRig Alpha One (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 10deg which can be tilted upwards to any angle up to 27deg.

Van Rysel XCR (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 15deg which can be tilted upwards using the 5deg Van Rysel tilt spacers to a maximum of 45deg.

Ventum One (monopost) – adapter has a base angle of 15deg which can be tilted upwards to any angle up to 35deg.

Choice of adapter angle is dependent on personal aerodynamics and comfort preference, as well as UCI restrictions (only applies if racing in UCI TTs).

As a guide, 15deg Ascalon adapters will result in a hand height relative to elbow position approximately similar to using 20-25deg standard 22.2mm extensions, 20deg adapters will result in a hand height approximately similar to using 30-35deg extensions, and 25deg adapters will result in a hand height approximately similar to using 40-45deg extensions.

3. END GRIPPER

Ascalons come in five options, all of which can be used in UCI and triathlon events:

We recommend starting by determining the shifter type that will be used with Ascalons. Based on this we would recommend the following gripper choices:

- Shimano 1-button shifters (e.g. R9160) – long or hook grippers

- Shimano 2-button shifters or long 1-button shifters (R9070)- short grippers

- Shimano climbing switch (SW-R9150) or satellite shifter (SW-RS801-E) – inward grippers (when using inward grippers with Shimano SW-R9150 shifters, you may require an EW-JC200 extender as the SW-9150 shifters have a 260mm integrated cable)

- SRAM clics – long or hook grippers

- SRAM wireless blips – inward grippers, or long grippers with wireless blip carriers

- SRAM wired blips – inward grippers

- Campagnolo EPS – short grippers

- Mechanical gears – please note Ascalons are not compatible with mechanical gears

Reach and height measurements will vary depending on the gripper and adapter type.

4. EXTRA REACH GRIPPERS

Grippers can be made with an additional 40mm of reach added to the straight part that follows the lower arm. Please refer to the reach diagrams further down this page which show dimensions without extra reach added.

5. SRAM SHIFTER MOUNTS

This selection applies only if you are using SRAM blips with Ascalons.

If you will use wireless blips with long, short or hook gripper Ascalons, you will need to choose ‘wireless blip carriers’.

If you will use wired blips with inward grippers, you will need to choose ‘wired blip carriers’.

6. COMPUTER MOUNT

An integrated computer mount is available for both Garmin and Wahoo computers. There is a weight limit of 120g for accessories mounted underneath the head unit using the optional action mount.

The standard computer mount puts the Garmin / Wahoo level with the inside of the wrists. The high computer mount puts the Garmin / Wahoo just above the level of the wrists (please note that the UCI height measurement is taken from the centre of the arm rests to the highest point on the extensions - this may be the bicycle computer with the high computer mount). 7. ARM RESTS

Ascalon extensions use Align Wing carbon arm rests. If you already own these, they will be fully compatible with Ascalon extensions. Bolts will be provided with your Ascalon purchase to attach your current Align Wing carbon arm rests.

8. BTA MOUNT

For more information on the Ascalon BTA bottle mount, please see here. BTA mounts come in two widths – we will supply the right width for your Ascalons based on your base bar adapter selection.

9. EXTRA BOLT PACK

The dimensions of the extra bolt pack refer only to the height of the aerobar stackers being used (i.e. a '+20mm extra bolt pack' means that additional bolts will be provided to account for 20mm of aerobar stackers being used in addition to the Ascalon and tilt block adapter).

The extra bolt pack dropdown selection applies to:

- tilt block adapters (adapter dropdown menu includes the words “tilt blocks” in the description), apart from: universal M5 and M6 tilt block adapters, Bianchi Aquila, Cannondale Superslice, Dare TSRf, ENVE SES, Pinarello Bolide F disc brake and Zipp Vuka Stealth for which base bar bolts are not provided.

- For Giant Trinity please note that a minimum of 10mm of Trinity stackers must be used under the tilt block adapter - the 'extra bolt pack' length refers to the height of any stackers used in addition to this.

To calculate the reach range for your bike, please add the reach measurement for your specific adapter (geometry diagrams below), to the reach range for Ascalons (255-305mm for long gripper Ascalons excluding shifters).

Example 1: Ascalons mounted on tilt block adapters (e.g. for Pro Missile Evo) can be adjusted between 255-305mm (255-305mm + 0mm) from the centre of the rear base bar mounting hole, to the tips of the Ascalons excluding shifters.

Example 2: Ascalons mounted on the Specialized Shiv TT disc adapters can be adjusted between 292.5-342.5mm (255-305mm + 37.5mm) from the centre of the rear base bar mounting hole, to the tips of the Ascalons excluding shifters.
