FMB/AeroCoach Pista 3000 tyres
Together with artisan French tyre maker FMB (François-Marie Boyaux), AeroCoach has helped developed the fastest rolling track tyres ever.
Compared with the most popular track tubular tyre, upgrading to an FMB/AeroCoach Pista Ultra 3000 tubular is worth around 1 metre advantage every single lap of a 250m indoor wooden velodrome.
FMB/AeroCoach Pista Ultra 3000 tyres feature a red latex tread, and FMB/AeroCoach Pista Gold 3000 tyres feature a gold latex tread.
DEVELOPMENT
FMB/AeroCoach Pista 3000 tyres feature an innovative compressed thread cotton construction which results in a highly supple casing that is more efficient than other types of casing, such as traditional cotton or silk. Both the tubular and clincher versions feature this technology, and the clinchers have a reinforced Zylon bead to allow for high pressures of up to 130psi.
Latex tread of varying thickness (a thicker tread is used on the Pista Gold variant compared with the Pista Ultra) provides exceptional grip as well as very low Crr (coefficient of rolling resistance).
DATA
This chart shows the rolling resistance difference between the FMB/AeroCoach Pista Ultra and Gold clincher and tubular tyres against other tyres on the market.
The clincher FMB/AeroCoach Pista Ultra 3000 has the lowest rolling resistance of any track tyre we have tested. In second place is the tubular Pista Ultra 3000 which has a Crr around 4.5% higher. The thicker tread version, recommended for sprinters doing fast standing starts is called the Pista Gold 3000 and has a gold tread. This on average has a Crr 13.5% higher than the Pista Ultra 3000.
If you ride Vittoria Pista Speed tubulars at 150psi, or Vittoria Pista Oro clinchers at 115psi (nearly identical Crr values), then swapping to the Pista Ultra 3000 tubular or the Pista Ultra 3000 clincher is around 1 metre advantage every single lap of a 250m velodrome when travelling at 55kph: 91cm per lap for the tubular and 105cm per lap for the clincher, all things being equal. The tubular Pista Ultra 3000 compared with the now discontinued tubular Dugast Pista Latex Silk is ~52cm advantage per lap.
A rolling resistance change of 0.6w on the chart is worth around 25m over an hour record at 55kph.
USAGE
FMB/AeroCoach Pista Ultra & Gold 3000 tyres are for indoor wooden velodrome use only.
Clincher tyres should be mounted only on hooked rims (not hookless). Recommended internal rim width 19-21mm. Clincher maximum inflation pressure is EITHER the wheel manufacturer’s maximum recommended pressure OR 130psi / 9bar, whichever is lowest. Recommended inner tubes: latex or TPU of an appropriate width.
Tubular tyres must be professionally mounted by a qualified bicycle mechanic on tubular rims with rim cement. Replace tyre if dismounted from rim. Tubular max inflation pressure 180psi / 12.5bar.
Always inspect the tread before every ride - if there is excessive wear or damage then replace the tyre.
